The Onion Project in Guinea

The Basalle Setto project is an ambitious initiative with the potential to make a positive impact on the agricultural sector in Guinea. The project aims to promote sustainable farming practices, create new markets, and improve the livelihoods of farmers. At the core of the project is the use of a new type of onion seed, enabling onion production during the rainy season, something that was previously impossible, resulting in high reliance on imports.

Objective

Increase the income of small-scale farmers (men and women) in Guinea and improve their livelihoods of their households by supporting onion production during the rainy season.

Core activitites

  • Access to Inputs:
    the project provides farmers with access to seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs necessary for onion production.
  • Good Agricultural Practices:
    farmers receive training in good agricultural practices and post-harvest handling techniques, including crop rotation and soil fertilization.
  • Storage Facilities:
    the project assists farmers in constructing storage facilities for their onions.
  • Markets:
    collaboration with local and regional markets to provide farmers access to markets for their onions.

Impact

  • Increased Productivity:
    the project anticipates expects a 50% increase in onion productivity during the rainy season.
  • Increased Access to Inputs and Financing:
    farmers are expected to have easier access to the inputs and financing needed for onion production.
  • Increased Access to Storage Facilities and Markets:
    improved access to storage facilities and markets for farmers' onions.
  • Improved Farmer Livelihood:
    the project expects to increase farmers' income to increase by 2,000 euros per year.

Specific sub-goals

  • Train 1,500 farmers in good agricultural practices and post-harvest handling techniques.
  • Achieve 325 hectares of improved onion production (150 ha during the rainy season and 175 ha during the dry season).
  • Supply at least 3,500 tons of onions to the market.
  • Support at least 70% women and youth among the beneficiary farmers.

This project is a step towards sustainable agricultural development and economic growth in Guinea, with a particular focus on gender equality and youth participation.
